Robert Geathers re-signs with Bengals, according to report

The veteran defensive end will come back for his 10th season in Cincinnati. Find out the details here.

Rob Carr

Robert Geathers is not a big-name defensive end. He has never been named to the Pro Bowl and he doesn't rack up very many sacks, but he has played for the Bengals for nine years since being taken in the fourth round of the 2004 draft, and he's likely to play a 10th after agreeing to a new contract with Cincinnati as free agency opened up on Tuesday.

Geathers, 29, started all 16 games for the Bengals last season and totaled 30 tackles with three sacks. He has only recorded more than 3.5 sacks in a season once during his career, when he had 10.5 sacks back in 2006. Other than that, he’s provided more in terms of run defense than pass-rushing ability, but it does leave Cincinnati with one less hole to fill on the defense.

They already applied the franchise tag to fellow defensive end Michael Johnson earlier in the offseason.

If he makes the team, Geathers will be the third defensive lineman in Bengals history to play at least 10 seasons with the team. This move leaves Cincinnati with a few more players that they'll presumably try to retain, including offensive tackle Andre Smith and cornerback Adam Jones.

According to OvertheCap.com, the Bengals had the third-most cap room in the NFL before this signing. Details on reported Geathers contract are not yet known.
