James Casey signs with Eagles, according to report

The versatile tight end is heading to the NFC after four years with the Texans. How will he fit in with Chip Kelly’s offense?

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

James Casey has made a bit of a name for himself with the Texans over the last four years, coming out of seemingly nowhere to start nine games for Houston in 2012 and catching 34 passes for 330 yards. According to reports, however, Casey will be trying to make a name for himself in a whole new city: Philadelphia.

The Eagles have reportedly signed Casey to a free agent contract.

The Texans opted to let another free agent walk away, which appears to becoming quite the trend for Houston. Last offseason, they saw the departure of tight end Joel Dreessen, receiver Jacoby Jones, defensive end Mario Williams and linebacker DeMeco Ryans. Now, Casey will be joining Ryans in Philadelphia, where he will likely become an important part of the offense as the league waits to see how Chip Kelly's successful schemes at the University of Oregon translate to the NFL.

Casey was a fifth-round pick in 2009 and worked his way up toward playing a key role on the offense by 2011. He caught 18 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown that season, before catching three more touchdowns in 2012. The 6'3, 235-pound tight end had a career-high five catches for 126 yards against the Saints on Sept. 25, 2011.

His versatility on the offense and ability to run, block and catch could prove very interesting in Philly, and he’s only the first of interesting moves by Kelly.
