Chris Canty signs with Ravens, according to report

After losing several linebackers to free agency and retirement, Baltimore added one on Tuesday.

Chris McGrath

It hasn't been a great offseason for the Baltimore Ravens, so it's a good thing they just won the Super Bowl. Ray Lewis retired, Anquan Boldin was traded to the 49ers, Ed Reed is a free agent that is likely not returning, Paul Kruger signed with the Browns, and Dannell Ellerbe signed with the Dolphins. That left the Ravens very thin at the linebacker, so they finally struck back and signed free agent Chris Canty, formerly of the New York Giants.

Canty, 30, is not considered to be on the level of Ellerbe, Lewis, or Kruger, but he has been a starter in the NFL for most of the last seven years with the Cowboys and Giants. He was a fourth round pick by Dallas in 2005, became a full-time starter in 2006 and then signed a six-year, $42 million contract with the Giants in 2009. He helped the Giants win the Super Bowl in 2011 but was released after this past season.

Canty’s production doesn’t jump out as you, with career-highs of four sacks and 48 tackles in 2011, but he provides adequate help in the linebacker corps and is a significant upgrade over what the Ravens currently have.

Which after the start of free agency, was almost nothing.
