Jaguars release Laurent Robinson, according to report

Robinson caught just 24 passes during his time with the Jaguars.

Phil Sears-US PRESSWIRE

New Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell continued his trim of the roster on Wednesday, releasing wide receiver Laurent Robinson just one year after he signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

Robinson, 27, racked up 11 touchdown receptions with the Dallas Cowboys in the 2011 regular season before leaving to join the Jaguars. However, head injuries plagued his short time in Jacksonville as he accumulated four concussions before he was placed on injured reserve in November. In seven games with the Jaguars, Robinson tallied 24 receptions, 252 yards and didn't earn a single touchdown.

Also hurting Robinson's cause was the emergence of second-year wide receiver Cecil Shorts III, who finished the 2012 season with 979 yards receiving, the most that any Jaguars receiver had accumulated since 2005.

Robinson now represents plenty of dead money on the Jaguars salary cap, but is one of a few purges that Caldwell has made since taking over the Jaguars roster. Both Dawan Landry and Aaron Ross were also released in the past week.

O’Halloran reported that Robinson passed a physical earlier in the offseason meaning the Jaguars did not need to come to an injury settlement to release the wide receiver.
