NFL free agent news: Eagles sign Kenny Phillips, Cary Williams

Philadelphia begins working toward improving one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL from a year ago. How much help will Kenny Phillips and Cary Williams provide?

USA TODAY Sports

It was only two years ago that many thought the Philadelphia Eagles were the best team in the NFL and winning the Super Bowl was only a formality. That did not even come close to happening, but at least on Thursday, they did sign a player that is just coming off of a championship victory. It's a start.

The Eagles signed cornerback Cary Williams away from the Super Bowl-winning Ravens, as they try to replace the departed Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Williams has started every game for Baltimore over the last two years and recorded 67 tackles and four interceptions in 2012. He also added two interceptions in the playoffs, including one in the Super Bowl win over the 49ers.

In addition to Williams, the Eagles also signed cornerback Kenny Phillips away from the New York Giants. Phillips, 26, has failed to live up to the hype after being a first-round pick in 2008. He started most of the Giants games over 2010 and 2011, but was limited to seven games last year with a knee injury. When he was healthy, he was not that effective; Phillips has just five interceptions over his last 38 games.

Still, that could be enough for the Eagles after they allowed the most touchdown passes in the league last year. Whether or not Williams and Phillips are an upgrade over Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie remains to be seen, but it would be hard-pressed to believe the secondary could be any worse.
