Cardinals release Kevin Kolb

Arizona thought it had a franchise quarterback when it traded for Kevin Kolb. They released him on Friday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals announced Friday morning that the team released quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Arizona wanted to restructure Kolb’s contract to make it more cap-friendly, but the University of Houston product refused, forcing the Cardinals’ hand before his guaranteed money begins to kick in.

Kolb was acquired two years ago for a second-round draft choice and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Things went sour immediately, due in large part to the expectations placed on him with a six-year, $63 million contract.

In two campaigns with Arizona, Kolb played in a grand total of 15 games, including just six last year. Overall, Kolb threw 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions for the Cardinals, barely eclipsing 3,000 yards in that span.

For now, the quarterback battle in Arizona is a disaster, consisting of Drew Stanton, Ryan Lindley and John Skelton. However, the Cardinals hold the No. 7 pick in the draft, which many believe will be spent on a quarterback.
