NFL rule changes: Matt Forte among backs who dislike the change

Matt Forte does not like the NFL trying to enforce penalties on a running back’s instinct.

The NFL's rules committee will propose a rule this week to penalize players for initiating contact with the crown of his helmet, and Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte is among the active players who have outspokenly disagreed with the proposed rule. Forte tweeted his opinion Sunday afternoon.

Emmitt Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, went on a Dallas radio show Thursday and also voiced his opinion.

“If I’m a running back and I’m running into a linebacker, you’re telling me I have to keep my head up so he can take my chin off? You’ve absolutely lost your mind.”

The rule is the latest in a series of rules the NFL has sought to increase player safety. Sporting News compiled a list of other rule changes the rules committee may seek at this week’s league meetings. The list includes eliminating the tuck rule, banning peel-back blocks inside the tackles and a change in the procedure of throwing challenge flags.

Owners of at least 24 of the league’s 32 teams must vote to change a rule at the meetings for the rule to take effect for the upcoming season.
