NFL free agent tracker: Ryan Fitzpatrick visited Bengals on Sunday

Ryan Fitzpatrick appears to be searching for backup jobs after being released by the Bills. He took a look at Cincinnati this past weekend.

Former Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick visited the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, according to Geoff Hobson of the Bengals official website. Fitzpatrick spoke with head coach Marvin Lewis at the NFL’s spring meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. to talk about returning to his old position.

Fitzpatrick served as the Bengals backup to Carson Palmer for two seasons before signing with the Bills in 2009. With Bruce Gradkowksi backing up Andy Dalton these days, it would be a smart move for Cincinnati to bring back the Harvard grad.

Buffalo cut ties with Fitzpatrick due to his huge cap hit. The 30-year-old passer was set to receive over $10 million total for 2013. His level of play was not living up to those standards in recent years.

At this point, it seems Fitzpatrick understands his expected role going forward. He won’t find a team looking to bring him in as a clear-cut starter. Taking a backup job with the Bengals makes sense given his familiarity with the organization.
