James Harrison rumors: Steelers LB ‘coldest name’ in free agency

How many teams are interested in signing James Harrison these days? You might be surprised at the number.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

James Harrison has spent his free agency period talking about the teams he’d like to play for in 2013. Unfortunately for Harrison, no one is reciprocating the interest in his services, as Sports Illustrated’s Peter King labels the linebacker as the “coldest name” on the market right now.

Reporting from the NFL Annual League Meeting in Phoenix, King says he can't find anyone admitting to being interested in signing Harrison. The 34-year-old was released by the Steelers due to his steep contract for the coming season. He won't be playing for that same price again, as King notes.

It seems if he wants to play this year, he’ll have to do it for less than half of what he was supposed to make for the Steelers. He should have taken the cut the Steelers were offering.

Harrison was set to make a base salary of $6.57 million in 2013. His total cap would have cost the Steelers a whopping $10.035 million. There won’t be a single team willing to pay him close to that number going forward.

Pro Football Focus rated Harrison as the 10th-best outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme for the 2012 season. He can still provide an instant impact for whatever team he signs with. Finding a suitor, though, could be a more arduous task than initially expected.
