Brent Grimes, Nnamdi Asomugha out of Redskins’ price range

The Redskins are still looking for another starter at corner, but don’t look for Brent Grimes or Nnmadi Asomugha to suit up in Washington next season. Cap room is tight these days.

The Washington Redskins cut ties with DeAngelo Hall last week, creating a void on the depth chart at cornerback heading into the 2013 season. With limited cap space this year, the Redskins won’t be signing Brent Grimes or Nnamdi Asomugha, as their prices are too high for the franchise, according to Rich Campbell of The Washington Times.

Grimes played under a franchise tag in Atlanta last season, but missed the majority of 2012 after suffering a torn Achilles in Week 1 against Kansas City. Asomugha signed a five-year, $60 million contract with the Eagles in 2011. His poor play in recent years resulted in his release last week, as Philadelphia wasn’t interested in overpaying anymore.

Both corners have major question marks, but they will still receive relatively expensive deals somewhere. The Redskins are currently hindered by a $36 million salary cap penalty. Despite working hard to free up space, they still won’t be able to sign a starting corner for top dollar.

Washington was one of the league’s worst pass defenses last season. With Hall gone, the secondary is even more of a pressing issue.
