Greg Hardy hopes for extension from Panthers

The defensive end is entering the last year of his rookie deal.

USA TODAY Sports

Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy is seeking a contract extension from the team, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

Hardy’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the team have already “initiated contract talks,” according to Person.

Hardy will enter the last year of his rookie contract in 2013. Hardy was a sixth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Mississippi.

In his three seasons in Carolina, Hardy has played in 46 games and started 28 of them. In his career he has 137 total tackles, 18 sacks, 14 pass deflections and five forced fumbles.

Hardy, 24, had his breakout season in 2012. In 15 games -- 12 of which he started -- Hardy recorded 61 total tackles and 11 sacks. He had two pass deflections and two forced fumbles.

James Dator at Cat Scratch Reader liked what he saw from Hardy in the 2012 season. He graded the third-year defensive end as an A:

Greg Hardy isn’t a complete product yet, and that’s what makes his future so exciting. He still needs to better recognize plays pre-snap, which with further aid his first step, and generate more pressures. It remains to be seen what his long-term role in the organization is, especially with his contract up following the 2013 season, but for now it’s nice to sit back, and enjoy one of the league’s best pass-rush tandems.
