Cardinals rumors: Bruce Arians will avoid Arizona quarterback controversy

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians wants the quarterback controversy decided by the start of training camp, and in the early going, it appears Drew Stanton may have a leg-up on the competition.

New Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians does not want a quarterback controversy this season. While he expects battles to be waged for playing time along the offensive line, Arians told media Wednesday that he will pick a starting quarterback early during the 2013 NFL offseason.

The Cardinals have several potential starting candidates among John Skelton, Ryan Lindley, Brian Hoyer and Drew Stanton. None of those options conjure many positive thoughts among fans, however. Skelton, Lindley and Hoyer all started at some point last season, but all three came out on the wrong side of their TD-INT ratios. Kevin Kolb was able to do some good things under center for the Cards, but after his recent release, it doesn't look like he will be returning next season.

Arians may be counting on Stanton to take the reins next season, according to Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers. Stanton didn't play as poorly as his three competitors last season, but that's because he didn't play at all. Stanton last threw a pass when he was with the Detroit Lions during the 2010 season.

For his career, Stanton has completed less than 56 percent of his passes and thrown nine interceptions to five touchdowns. He may very well be Arians’ best answer under center, though Cardinals fans hope that it won’t be by default.
