Dolphins expect Miami to be awarded a Super Bowl during May NFL meetings

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee expects Miami to be named as a future Super Bowl host city. Plans for renovations to Sun Life Stadium may depend on the bid to be decided at the end of the NFL Spring League Meeting near the end of May.

The Miami Dolphins expect Miami to be named as a future Super Bowl host city, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee announced Thursday via Twitter. Nothing is official yet, and indeed from Dee's phrasing it's clear that even Dolphins don't know for sure. The winner is expected to be announced on the final day of the NFL Spring League Meeting from May 20-22.

The stadium contingency is interesting. Earlier this week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Dolphins owner Steven Ross indicated that the team’s Super Bowl bid could fail if renovation plans to Sun Life Stadium weren’t put in place quickly. Dee’s announcement suggests that the Dolphins won’t make the city of Miami commit to a stadium upgrade unless the city is awarded the Super Bowl, however.

The bid would be for the Super Bowl in 2016 or beyond. The 2014 Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., before moving back to a warmer climate for the 2015 Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. Dee also clarified that the Super Bowl committee plans to make downtown Miami the center of Super Bowl activities.
