After winning the Super Bowl, a lot of players like to spend the following months basking in the adoration of fans and well-wishers. Torrey Smith went to work instead, taking on a month-long internship for United States congressman Elijah Cummings, the Democratic representative for Maryland's 7th congressional district.
Torrey Smith interns for Elijah Cummings
Torrey Smith got to work after winning the Super Bowl in February, taking on an internship with congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland’s 7th congressional district.

Smith is reportedly in the final few days of an internship that saw him filing documents and opening mail as part of his duties. In exchange, the Baltimore Ravens wideout got a first-hand look at American democracy in action.
“I learned that there are really politicians that do a lot for their community - [Cummings] being one of them,” Smith said. “You can literally call your congressman and any issue you have, they can basically point you in the right direction if they can’t help you. I never really knew that.”
Cummings had a lot of positive things to say about Smith, who was a criminal justice major while he was playing football at the University of Maryland. Cummings’ district covers just over half of the city of Baltimore.
“It was a pleasure having Torrey Smith intern with us, and I was glad that I could offer him the opportunity,” Cummings said. “Torrey was eager to learn about the legislative process and was treated no differently than any of our other interns - all of whom play a meaningful and important role in helping me serve the constituents of Maryland’s 7th District.”
