Michael Bennett injury: Seahawks DE has rotator cuff tear, per report

The Seahawks made news when they signed Michael Bennett to a one-year contract at the start of free agency. Unfortunately, it now appears that a torn rotator cuff injury could delay his debut.

USA TODAY Sports

When Michael Bennett signed with the Seattle Seahawks, many were surprised that the contract was for just one season. Now the reasoning is a little more clear: Bennett has been a diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Sunday evening.

Bennett should be in the prime of his career. At 27 years old, he racked up nine sacks in 16 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A rotator cuff could be an issue with offseason team activities looming, however. Bennett reportedly dealt with shoulder pain throughout the 2012 season, but started all 16 regular season games anyway.

It is unclear yet how the Seahawks plan to handle Bennett. If the defensive end needs surgery, he may be forced to miss useful practice time this offseason. Bennett was signed by the Seahawks along with former Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril to form what is expected to be a fearsome pass rushing tandem next year.
