Michael Bennett injury update: Seahawks DL reportedly has torn rotator cuff

We now know why Michael Bennett signed just a one-year deal with Seattle. An injury could jeopardize his playing time in 2013.

The free agent market wasn't exactly clamoring for the services of Michael Bennett, and now we know why. The Seattle Seahawks new defensive end was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, which could affect his impact on this upcoming season.

Bennett signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Seahawks earlier this month, creating a bit of confusion as to why he received such a short contract. Seattle was initially praised for its moves in free agency, but now they may be looking at two ailing defensive ends for 2013. Chris Clemons is coming off of reconstructive knee surgery.

Although he was listed on injury reports throughout 2012 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bennett played 985 snaps, fourth-most on the defense, according to Pro Football Focus. Seattle must have known his condition prior to signing. Otherwise, the "Failure to Disclose Physical Condition" designation would allow them to get money back.

We don't know if Bennett will undergo surgery to repair his injured shoulder. Some players have simply powered through the pain in the past. Antrel Rolle played with two torn rotator cuffs in the Giants most recent Super Bowl run. If Bennett chooses surgery, he could miss months while recovering, which would put the start of next season in jeopardy.
