2013 NFL season could open with Ravens, Broncos rematch

The reigning Super Bowl champs might be starting their 2013 campaign with a playoff rematch against the Denver Broncos.

The Baltimore Ravens won't be opening the 2013 season at M&T Bank Stadium due to scheduling conflicts with the Baltimore Orioles. With the reigning Super Bowl champs in need of a new place to play, Sports Illustrated's Peter King sees a rematch with the Denver Broncos as the most likely scenario.

Surely everyone recalls the Ravens' divisional playoff victory over the Broncos back in January. Jacoby Jones caught a seven-yard touchdown pass with just 38 seconds remaining, ultimately leading to Justin Tucker's game-winning field goal in double-overtime. Denver dominated Baltimore 34-17 earlier in the season in Week 15, so an opener could be considered somewhat of a rubber match. Maybe we'll stray away from the baseball references, though, given the circumstances.

Now that Elvis Dumervil has signed with the Ravens, even more drama is added to the rematch. Of course King is simply speculating based on his own opinion, but this is a smart choice for the opener.

The Ravens will be the first Super Bowl champ to open the season away from home in a decade. With shared parking lots between both Baltimore teams, two games running at the same time will not work. The Orioles and White Sox will be coming off of road games the previous night, so asking them to play early the following day is not a sensible solution.

If King’s prediction comes true, the ratings will be through the roof for the Ravens-Broncos season opener.
