Cowboys, Anthony Spencer negotiating multi-year contract, according to report

A new deal would free salary cap space for the Cowboys.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys and defensive end Anthony Spencer are negotiating a multi-year contract, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

Werder tweeted the new contract could create cap space so the Cowboys could sign another free agent or two. Blogging the Boys writes a Spencer deal could help “start filling some of the holes on (the Cowboys) roster with affordable veterans.”

The Cowboys franchise tagged Spencer before the start of free agency. The defensive end is set to make $10.6 million this season unless the team can work out a new contract.

Spencer, 29, has been a solid contributor for the Cowboys during his career. Spencer was the 26th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cowboys. After two seasons as a backup, Spencer has been a starter for the last four seasons.

He’s recorded at least five sacks in all four seasons as a starter. In 2012 he nearly doubled his sack numbers, recording 11 in 14 games. He also had 95 total tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
