The Kansas City Chiefs have undergone one of the biggest overhauls of the NFL offseason this year, having hired Andy Reid as head coach, traded for Alex Smith to start at quarterback, and preparing to make the number one overall pick in the draft. Those are all moves that have been right dab in the middle of the spotlight for the Chiefs, but perhaps a lower-profile move could pay off just as well.
Brad Childress hired by Chiefs as offensive assistant
Andy Reid adds a familiar name to his staff as Kansas City looks to recover from the worst record in the NFL last season. What can Childress bring to the rebuilding project?

They are probably hoping so after hiring former Vikings head coach Brad Childress as an offensive assistant to Reid. Childress had previously spent seven seasons under Reid in Philadelphia as quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator, before taking the head coaching job in Minnesota.
Childress was in Minnesota from 2006-2010, having been fired after a 3-7 start in the 2010 season. The Vikings had made the NFC Championship game the year prior with Childress and quarterback Brett Favre, but the head coach came under some controversy following the release of Randy Moss and a supposed dispute with owner Zygi Wilf. He did not coach in 2011, but spent last season as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns went 5-11 last season and finished 24th in scoring before firing head coach Pat Shurmur and his staff. Now Childress, 56, will transition toward helping the Chiefs rebound from a 2-14 season and elevating an offense that features Smith, Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, and could possibly add a premier left tackle like Luke Joeckel in the draft next month.
A team could do a lot worse.
