Tony Romo contract: Cowboys QB’s long-term deal ‘imminent,’ according to report

A long-term extension for Romo is reportedly going to get done soon. Romo would otherwise become a free agent after the 2013 season.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

A long-term contract agreement between the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Tony Romo is "imminent," according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas. Archer added that a deal is so close that it could happen in a matter of hours.

Romo signed a six-year deal worth $67.5 million with the Cowboys back in 2007, which expires following the 2013 season. Because of a technicality, the Cowboys would not be able to place their franchise tag on Romo in 2014, but given Archer’s report, that issue appears to be moot. Romo is set to make $11.5 million in 2013.

The 10-year veteran has spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys, becoming the team’s starter in 2006. He has earned three trips to the Pro Bowl, and last season he threw for a career-high 4,903 yards. It was the fourth time he threw for more than 4,000 yards in a single season.
