NFL free agency: Dashon Goldson reportedly seeks $8 million per year

Dashon Goldson is expected to test the free agent market, and he’s reportedly looking for $8 million per year.

As the NFL franchise tag deadline approaches, the San Francisco 49ers are not expected to use a tag on safety Dashon Goldson. The two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency soon, and he is reportedly seeking a contract worth $8 million per year, a source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Goldson played under a franchise tag last season, but he’s clearly interested in landing a multi-year deal. The 28-year-old recorded 69 total tackles, 11 pass deflections and three interceptions in 2012. Pro Football Focus rated Goldson at No. 20 overall among all safeties last season.

The Green Bay Packers are on the hunt for a new safety. Speculation is already beginning to circulate about Goldson’s potential in playing for Green Bay next season. Goldson would not be a cheap signing, but he would immediately improve the Packers secondary.

Chargers safety Eric Weddle signed a five-year, $40 million contract back in 2011. His base salary will be $6 million in 2013. Goldson’s asking price would rank him among the league’s elite at his position.

Expect to see Goldson draw interest from multiple teams if the 49ers don’t offer him a long-term deal in the coming weeks.
