Jaguars release Aaron Ross, according to report

Aaron Ross’ disappointing tenure with the Jaguars has come to an end after just one season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released cornerback Aaron Ross on Friday, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union. With this move, Rashean Mathis moving on and Derek Cox still a free agent, the Jaguars are left with just two cornerbacks left on their roster -- Mike Harris and Kevin Rutland.

The Jaguars signed Ross to a three-year, $9.75 million contract last offseason hoping that the two-time Super Bowl champion would give the team a much-needed boost in the secondary, but it never happened. Ross was a massive disappointment and started just nine of 14 games. By the end of the season he lost his starting job to the rookie Harris.

According to O’Halloran, cutting Ross will cost the Jaguars just $666,667 in dead money. With a cap number over $4 million, that represents a savings of over $3 million in 2013 and gives the team nearly $30 million in cap room.

With just two cornerbacks left on the roster, Jacksonville obviously has a lot of work to do at the position and they may still bring Cox back. The free agent’s representatives and the Jaguars have been discussing a deal, but one does not appear imminent.
