The San Diego Chargers released safety Atari Bigby on Friday, according to Ricky Henne of Chargers.com, ending his one-year stint with the franchise. Parting ways with Bigby puts the Chargers $12.1 million under the salary cap, according to ESPN's John Clayton. Teams can begin negotiating with free agents on Friday night and begin signing them on March 12.

The veteran safety is back on the market after a season in San Diego, and the Chargers have a bit more salary cap room.

Bigby started 11 games for San Diego in 2012 and finished the year with 68 tackles and three passes defended. He was a member of a defense that ranked 18th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game.
Prior to coming to San Diego, he spent a season with Seattle and six with Green Bay. He has 46 career NFL starts, though he was used primarily as a reserve during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
