Louis Delmas said on Friday that he expects to become a free agent this weekend. The Detroit Lions' safety had his knees evaluated by the team on Friday, something that some thought could be the precursor to a new contract, but he left without a new deal and told the Detroit Free Press he didn't expect to get one:

The Lions and Louis Delmas have not agreed to a new deal so the safety will become a free agent.

If something could get done today, something would have got done two months ago, during the season. But other than that, I don’t have no expectations of coming up here and getting a deal done, I’m just coming up here to come back home. I’ve been here eight years, went to college here. I’ve been (with the Lions) four years, so this is definitely home. I’m just coming back to my roots and seeing where I end up next year.
Delmas has been a very good player for the Lions when he has been able to play, but he’s dealt with knee injuries for the last two seasons. The safety played 15 games in each of his first two years, but managed just 11 games in 2011 and after undergoing surgery to relieve tendinitis in his knee before the 2012, he played just eight games last year.
If the Lions could count of Delmas to be healthy, the would have probably locked him up by now, but they have been evaluated his health all season and treading carefully. At the scouting combine, GM Martin Mayhew said, “our doctors are still evaluating his situation.”
Delmas has taken the Lions’ reluctance to re-sign him personally, too, also via the Detroit Free Press:
The Lions are cheating on me. They’re going to the club every damn night and staying out late night, trying to come back home to Daddy. But it’s alright.
Despite that, Delmas reiterated his desire to remain with the Lions. Whether he does probably depends on his knees, but for now, he is going to be a free agent and able to sign with whoever he would like.
