Victor Cruz likely to attract interest as a restricted free agent

Victor Cruz could attract a lot of attention from NFL teams in the normally quiet restricted free agent market, according to reports.

USA TODAY Sports

Victor Cruz could garner a lot of interest from other NFL teams as a restricted free agent, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. RFAs often don't cause much of a buzz during free agency--teams have to let go of a draft pick on top of paying a new contract--but Rapoport believes that teams may see Cruz as worth the first round tender that the wideout is likely to receive.

The New York Giants have the right to match any offer sheet, of course. The organization will be working hard before free agency begins to work out a long-term deal with Cruz, as well. If a deal can't get done by March 12, however, other teams could pounce by making an offer that the Giants may not be willing to match, given their relative lack of salary cap space.

Cruz posted his second straight season with over 1,000 yards in 2012. His 86 receptions ranked 12th in the NFL last year. Cruz works primarily out of the slot, which may turn away some teams who see his production as a result of the Giants’ offensive system. At least, that may be the hope of the organization, which has come to rely on Cruz as not only a key player, but also as one of the most popular players among fans.
