The quarterback situation for the Cleveland Browns is anything but certain looking into the future, but the team appears to be content with letting Brandon Weeden take the majority of the first-string snaps in preparation for the coming season. According to Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer, Weeden will be the one rolling with the starters and should be No. 1 on the depth chart for Week 1 of the regular season.

The Browns look like they’ll be letting Brandon Weeden control the starting spot on the depth chart going forward into next season. Is he the right choice at quarterback? Can Jason Campbell give him a run for his money?

Signs have been pointing to Weeden for a while. The 29-year-old quarterback said in February he completely expected to be the starter this year. After starting 15 games as a rookie in 2012, the jury was still out on his future with the Browns. A new regime in Cleveland also means there aren’t any favorites among the roster right now.

Head coach Rob Chudzinski is starting fresh in Cleveland. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner came over after being fired by the San Diego Chargers. General manager Michael Lombardi and CEO Joe Banner are new as well. This isn't the group that drafted Weeden in the first round last year. There don't have ties to him. While he currently sits at the top candidate for the job, Cleveland's quarterback situation won't be set in stone until Weeden proves himself a capable starter.
Banner said Weeden will be given his best chance to succeed in 2013. It wasn’t exactly a vote of confidence, but the Browns are going to let their second-year quarterback make his case to remain under center. His 5-10 campaign as a rookie was tough to watch at times. Weeden only completed 57.4 percent of his passes while throwing 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Josh Finney of Dawgs By Nature thinks offseason work and training camp will be the most important time for him to improve from 2012.
However, the quarterback he battled on the depth chart is gone in Cleveland.The Browns released Colt McCoy and brought in Jason Campbell, an experienced veteran expected to provide a solid backup for Weeden.
As Pluto notes, the Browns don’t see any passers worth drafting at No. 6 overall later this month. With Weeden and Campbell on the roster, he doesn’t see the situation as a quarterback competition in Cleveland. Pluto says Weeden is the guy until the team says otherwise. Then it will be Campbell’s turn if it gets to that point.
Look for the Browns to move forward with Weeden in the starting role. That’s the plan to open up the 2013 season. We’ll see how he progresses with a new offense in his second year in the league. Campbell is ready to step in if he falters.
