49ers extension with Anthony Davis includes weight ‘de-escalators’

Anthony Davis’ extension with the 49ers includes a few interesting provisions, including multiple weight requirements.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony Davis signed a lucrative long-term extension extension recently, but if he’s going to collect the full value of the contract he’ll have to keep his weight in check.

Last week, the 49ers and Davis agreed to a seven-year extension worth $37.295 million. The deal includes "de-escalators" in each season, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. If Davis fails to meet workout and weight requirements, his base pay would be greatly reduced. According to Maiocco, each of the final five years of the deal include a $1.25 million provision which is tied to Davis fulfilling offseason workout and weight requirements.

The 6’3, 323-pound Davis struggled with his weight during college, reportedly weighing as much as 363 pounds as a freshman. As part of his deal, Davis received a $7.5 million signing bonus. If he plays out the life of his contract and fails to meet the requirements each season, he could lose more than $6 million.
