The New Orleans Saints have signed offensive tackle Jason Smith to a one-year contract, according to the team's official site. Smith is entering his fifth NFL season and playing for his third team in as many years.

New Orleans addressed a hole at the tackle position on Thursday.

Smith has been a disappointment since the Rams picked him second overall in 2009, but he does have the potential to be a starter for the Saints. New Orleans is thin at tackle after losing Jerome Bushrod to the Bears in March. The former Baylor Bear has logged 26 starts in his NFL career. Smith's career high came in 2010, when he started 15 games for the St. Louis Rams.
The Rams traded Smith to the Jets in August 2012. He appeared in all 16 games for New York but did not start. His signing is part of a trend of low-cost moves with potentially big rewards by the Saints this offseason. The team has had little cap room to work with, but has addressed most of its needs.
