2013 NFL draft buzz: Eagles eying big men, Mathieu failed drug tests, Dolphins want OT

The Eagles are all over the place in trying to figure out who to draft, but the Dolphins appear to have at least narrowed it down to one position.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

It’s the calm before the storm as NFL teams get to their final stages of evaluation before the posturing, rumors and dealing of NFL Draft week floods your draft feeds, but we still get served some morsels of news. What might the Eagles and Dolphins do? What’s going on with Tyrann Mathieu? It’s all here.

Eagles hosted Star Lotulelei, Lane Johnson up next

The Philadelphia Eagles may have their eyes on a a lineman with the No. 4 pick in the draft, but which side of the ball they want to pick a big man for remains up in the air. The Eagles hosted Utah's Star Lotulelei on Friday, giving them a look at one of the draft's best defensive tackles, but on Sunday their attention will turn to the offensive side of the ball when they host Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson. It's tough to get a read on new head coach Chip Kelly's plans, and these visits aren't helping any.

Tyrann Mathieu failed more than 10 drug tests at LSU

Tyrann Mathieu’s uphill climb to forge a NFL career got a little steeper with the news that Mathieu failed more than 10 drug tests at LSU. The defensive back reportedly “quit counting at 10,” which won’t do wonders for a reputation that was already far from sterling. All of the drug tests Mathieu reportedly failed came before checking into rehab, though, so there is hope that it is in his past and he is on the path to becoming a dependable person, which he has to do before he can be a dependable player.

Dolphins may trade up for offensive lineman

The Miami Dolphins have Jonathan Martin at one tackle position, but what about the other? And do they have three dependable interior linemen? Even the most optimistic of Fins fans have concerns about the Miami offensive line, which makes it no surprise that general manager Jeff Ireland is considering using their 11 draft picks to move up in the first round and pick-up the elite lineman they need.

Tavon Austin a better pick than Cordarrelle Patterson

Both Tavon Austin and Cordarrelle Patterson can both be explosive players in the NFL, but who should a team pick if they get a choice? Austin. He is the safer pick, with the moves and speed to make up for his size, while Patterson could be phenomenal, but is raw and is very much a risk.
