Vikings could ask Joe Webb to change positions

Seven Bags himself, as he’s called on his Wikipedia page, could take his athleticism to a new spot on the depth chart.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team may consider moving quarterback Joe Webb to a new position upon the signing of Matt Cassel.

Frazier said he wants to be able to utilize Webb’s athleticism in some form or another, Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

“[Webb] is such a talented athlete that we want to make sure that we’re doing the right thing by him and our team, as well,” Frazier said. “That’s something we’ll continue to discuss as we go forward.”

The team is unlikely to draft a quarterback, especially in the early rounds now that they have added Cassel.

Webb is 6'4 and 220 pounds, a player known more for his athleticism than his productivity in three NFL seasons, all with the Vikings. A video of him jumping over a stack of seven training bags almost six feet tall has over 650,000 views, and it was the buzz of the NFL when Webb was thrust into starting the Vikings' wild card playoff game in December against the Green Bay Packers. Webb was 11-of-30 for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 24-10 loss.

Before his playoff start last season, Webb had 673 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and four interceptions in three seasons. He also has 273 rushing yards and four scores.
