Tony Carter signs tender with Denver Broncos

The Broncos will bring back Tony Carter, another cornerback to complete a secondary group that should be strong with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Champ Bailey as starters.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos will keep a player who's turned into somewhat of a find for them, agreeing to a free agency tender with Tony Carter.

Carter, in his second stint with the Broncos, was an exclusive free agent and will make $715,000. He played in all but one game in 2012, was tops on the team with 12 passes defended, and had two picks, one of which he ran back for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers. He scored another touchdown on a fumble against the San Diego Chargers.

The fourth-year player had gone undrafted out of Florida State, and although he didn't make the Broncos initially out of training camp, they'd bring him back during the season. He'd have very brief stints with the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, but eventually made his way back to Denver midway through the 2011 season. In 2012, he'd have his best season in the NFL, establishing himself as the team's third cornerback behind Champ Bailey and Chris Harris. With both Bailey and Harris back in the fold and the addition of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Carter can hope to be a backup at one spot and for some snaps at nickelback.
