Rodger Saffold reports to Rams offseason activities

The tackle is upset about having to move to the right side of the line, but won’t sit out as a show of his displeasure with the team.

USA TODAY Sports

Offensive tackle Rodger Saffold has reported for offseason training with the St. Louis Rams, according to the team's website. Saffold was reportedly upset with the team after they signed free agent left tackle Jake Long, meaning that he would have to shift from left to right tackle.

Some thought that Saffold may stay away from the team’s voluntary workouts as a means of showing his displeasure with the position switch, but that apparently will not be the case. There was a period of time after the Rams signed Long that the team could not reach Saffold, which was particularly troubling considering the reported displeasure from him and his agent over the Long signing. Left tackles make more money than right tackles, and by bumping him over to the right side of the line, the Rams could be hurting Saffold’s earning potential on his next contract.

Saffold is in the last year of his rookie contract, and sitting out now may do him more harm than good when it comes to negotiating for his next deal, be it with the Rams or another team. Turf Show Times has a detailed post on the team’s options for what to do with Saffold, both for the 2013 season and moving forward.
