Eagles release Trent Edwards, according to report

Trent Edwards’ career in Philadelphia is over as the Eagles released the 29-year-old quarterback on Monday.

The Philadelphia Eagles still have an uncertain quarterback depth chart, but no matter how it shakes out, Trent Edwards will not be part of it. The Eagles released Edwards on Monday, according to a report from Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com.

After not being on a roster during the 2011 regular season, the 29-year-old Edwards spent last season in Philadelphia. He served as the No. 3 quarterback for most of the season, but did appear in one game. With Michael Vick restructuring his contract and Nick Foles establishing himself as a legitimate NFL quarterback, there wasn’t likely to be much of an opportunity for Edwards in Philadelphia.

Edwads became expendable after the Eagles signed Dennis Dixon earlier this offseason. Dixon played for new Philadelphia head coach Chip Kelly in college and is a better fit in Kelly’s system athletically than Edwards. Philadelphia also signed former undrafted free agent G.J. Kinne this offseason.

Following a season in Philadelphia, Edwards will now search for his fifth team in four years. Once thought to be the starter of the future in Buffalo, Edwards career dropped off quickly after the 2008 season. Injuries and ineffectiveness limited Edward in 2009 and he was released a few games into the 2010 season. He made stops in Jacksonville and Oakland before signing with Philadelphia.

Despite a few lackluster season recently, Edwards could still draw interest on the free agent market. The current free agent market for quarterbacks is thin and Edwards’ experience could be attractive as teams still search for backup and third-string quarterbacks.
