Long-time NFL broadcaster and former NFL kicker Pat Summerall died at the age of 82 on Monday, according to a report from the Dallas Morning News and a spokesman for Fox Sports.

A legend in the world of broadcasting, Summerall’s unmistakable voice and style became the signature voice of the NFL in the 1980s and ‘90s. He paired with John Madden to form one of the most recognizable broadcast duos in sports history. Week after week, Summerall and Madden were on the call for the NFL’s biggest games.

Although he was well-known as a broadcaster, Summerall spent 10 seasons as a kicker in the NFL. He played college football at Arkansas before he began his NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 1952. He also played for the New York Giants and Chicago Cardinals. Following the end to his playing days, Summerall began his broadcasting career as an analyst with CBS in 1962.

"He was something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be." -John Madden

He would eventually shift to play-by-play duties in the early 1970s. In 1981, Summerall teamed with Madden and the two worked together until Summerall retired following the 2001 season. He made a comeback during the 2002 season, but was no longer paired with Madden, who had moved to “Monday Night Football.” Summerall retired a second time in 2002, although he did work occasional NFL and college football games after that.
