NFL Draft 2013: Bills GM downplays need for guard

Buddy Nix backed experts off assumptions that the Bills are targeting Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

US PRESSWIRE

The Buffalo Bills need a guard after losing Andy Levitre in free agency, and the 2013 NFL Draft has two of the best guard prospects to come out of college in years in Alabama's Chance Warmack and UNC's Jonathan Cooper. Though guards rarely go in the Top ten, many have speculated that either player could be taken with the Bills' No. 8 overall pick. General managed Buddy Nix wants experts to back off that assumption.

“Not at all. Not at all,” said Nix. “I know people have said we’re taking one of those top two guards. Our roster in house is better than I think we get credit for especially offensive line. We’re pretty deep there. We’ve got six guards and we think a couple of them can play.”

With Chad Rinehart gone as well, the Bills' top two guards on the roster appear to be David Snow and Kraig Urbik. Snow went undrafted out of Texas last season and appeared in five games as a rookie. Urbik started 13 games in each of his last two seasons with the Bills. At a glance, it appears that Buffalo could use some help.

Nix didn’t entirely rule out targeting Warmack and Cooper, however, adding that that “both of those are great players so you have to give that a lot of thought when they come up.” It’s possible that Nix doesn’t want to tip his hand and that both guards are still very much in play.

Now just days before the start of the draft, expect a lot of smokescreens to be thrown by a lot of different teams. We’ll see what Buffalo does on April 25. At No. 8 overall, they will have a tough time going wrong with whomever they choose.
