NFL Draft 2013: Falcons reportedly trying to trade up

The Falcons are looking to trade up from the No. 30 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to reports. It’s still unclear what they want.

USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons are looking to move up from the No. 30 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. There is no indication of who the Falcons are targeting with a higher draft pick, though King has a few ideas.

Cornerback is the most glaring need on the Falcons' roster after they lost Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson in the offseason. Though King believes they could get a quality prospect at No. 30, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has speculated in the past that a move up to snag one Dee Milliner, Xavier Rhodes or Desmond Trufant is very possible.

Tight end would be a much bigger immediate need if Tony Gonzalez had retired as expected after the season, though the Falcons could feel that Eifert is a stronger prospect than whoever is expected to come out in 2014. A defensive lineman makes sense given this year’s bumper crop.

General manager Thomas Dimitroff has a history of making big moves on draft day. Two years ago, he gave two first-round picks, a second-round pick and two fourth-round picks to the Cleveland Browns in order to move from No. 27 to No. 6 to select Julio Jones.

It’d take a similar dowry to get to Milliner in the top 10, but don’t expect the Falcons to hesitate if they feel he’s worth it. With 11 draft picks in 2013, Atlanta has enough resources to potentially make a big leap.
