NFL Draft 2013: Andre Johnson asks Texans to draft WR

The Texans are so desperate for depth at wide receiver, Andre Johnson is asking the team to give him more competition with the No. 27 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Andre Johnson want the Houston Texans to take a wide receiver in the 2013 NFL Draft. He made that very clear while speaking at his annual football camp for kids on Saturday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“I’d like to have another (receiver),” Johnson said. “I’m all for it. I’ve asked for it for awhile. The more weapons we have, the better it’ll be for the team.”

The Texans have been linked to a wide receiver with the No. 27 overall pick in the first round of the draft throughout the offseason. Head coach Gary Kubiak acknowledged the need himself earlier this month. There is plenty of depth in this year's wide receiver class, with names like Tavon Austin, Cordarrelle Patterson, DeAndre Hopkins and Keenan Allen landing in the first round of SB Nation's latest mock draft.

Houston does not have a clear No. 2 wide receiver at the moment. The team released Kevin Walter to save space on the salary cap earlier this offseason. They drafted DeVier Posey out of Ohio State in the third round of last year's draft, and he took on an expanded role late in the 2012 season. A ruptured Achilles' tendon will likely leave Posey on the sideline to start the 2013 season, however.

That leaves Lestar Jean, now entering his third year in the NFL, as the Texans' de facto No. 2 behind Johnson. Jean has all of his six receptions for 151 yards to show for his career, highlighting the need to give Johnson some extra help.

The Texans don't have much history taking offensive players early in the draft. Since Johnson was selected as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Houston has selected just one offensive player in the first round--left tackle Duane Brown at No. 26 overall in 2008.
