Darrelle Revis trade: Cornerback signs $96 million contract with Buccaneers

Darrelle Revis is now the highest paid CB in the NFL, but he will have to earn that money.

As part of the deal that sent Darrelle Revis from the New York Jets to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Bucs signed a six-year, $96 million dollar contract with the cornerback, making him the highest paid defensive back in NFL history.

There’s a catch, however. Revis’ new contract does not include any guaranteed money, an unusual move for a player of Revis’ talent level. It’s a smart move for the Bucs, though, as they won’t be on the hook for anything if Revis is hit by injuries again. He’s currently rehabbing from a torn ACL.

Details of the contract are now emerging -- Revis will earn $16 million per year; $13 million of that is the base salary, with the rest coming in roster and workout bonuses.

The Bucs finalized their trade of Revis on Sunday, ending months of speculation. They gave up their 2013 first-round pick and a conditional 2014 pick. It’s a potential steal of a trade if Revis can get healthy and perform like an elite CB again.
