Chiefs call to ‘check on’ Sharrif Floyd

Could the Chiefs surprise everyone and take Sharrif Floyd? They are reportedly keeping tabs on him.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Most NFL observers expect the Chiefs to take an offensive tackle with the No. 1 pick, but that doesn't mean Kansas City isn't keeping its options open. Kansas City general manager John Dorsey called defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd to "check" on him on Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Checking in on a prospect could mean a lot of things and it doesn’t necessarily mean the Chiefs are considering taking Floyd No. 1 overall. Instead, Kansas City could be doing its due diligence in case the Chiefs trade down in the draft. It’s also possible the phone call was a smokescreen. Teams will go to extreme measures to “hide” their intentions in the days leading up to the draft. This wouldn’t be the first time a team has faked interest in a player.

If the interest is genuine, Floyd could make sense in Kansas City. As Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride wrote, the Chiefs have a major need along the defensive line and Floyd, or Utah’s Star Lotulelei could fit. Last week, Dorsey said the Chiefs were considering four players and if Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher are two of them, the Chiefs could indeed have genuine interest in Floyd.
