2013 NFL Draft: Darius Slay reportedly has torn meniscus

Darius Slay is dealing with a knee injury, and media caught wind just one day before the start of the 2013 NFL Draft.

USA TODAY Sports

Mississippi State cornerback Darius Slay has been dealing with a torn meniscus in his knee since his March 6 pro day workout, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The injury may have happened while he was running the 60-yard shuttle in Starkville. Slay is considered a potential Day 2 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The timing of the injury news is not ideal, with Day 1 of the NFL Draft set to begin Thursday, though it is likely that NFL teams have known about the injury for a while now and the media is just now catching wind. In any case, Slay’s draft stock could take a hit as a result. He is currently ranked as the No. 74 overall prospect and No. 9 cornerback in this year’s draft class by SB Nation’s Dan Kadar.

Fortunately for Slay, a torn meniscus is relatively easy to recover from. Depending on the severity of the injury, surgery may or may not be required before he can play his rookie season. The bigger issue, as Florio points out, is that Slay could have recurring problems as a result of missing cartilage in his knee.

Slay rose fast up draft boards after running the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds at the NFL Combine, which was the fastest time among defensive backs at the event. There are questions whether he has the quick feet and fluid hips to become a starter in the NFL, but Slay’s raw potential should entice some team to take a shot at him during the first half of the draft.
