RGIII injury update: Redskins ‘optimistic’ about recovery

Robert Griffin III is recovering well from offseason knee surgery, but the Redskins are being cautions not to rush him back, no matter how good he looks.

It's been less than four months since Robert Griffin III tore his ACL, LCL and meniscus in a playoff lost to Seattle, and while Mike Shanahan said everyone is optimistic about RGIII's recovery, the Redskins won't rush him back.

During a pre-draft press conference on Wednesday, Shanahan said Griffin is working extremely hard, but the injury still requires time to heal. Griffin has a reputation as a hard worker, but Shanahan said the team may actually have to slow him down to ensure he doesn’t rush back.

“He likes to work, all we asked and more,” Shanahan said. “We need to make sure he doesn’t go too quickly because he could set it back.”

Griffin, who began running earlier this month, appears to be recovering well so far. Without a major setback, he could be healthy in time to open the regular season, but Shahahan said the team will not rush him back. The Redskins’ coach said Griffin will not play unless he’s 100 percent. With what the Redskins invested to acquire Griffin and how much of a key to their success he was last season, erring on the side of caution makes a lot of sense. Griffin’s value to the organization supersedes the value of him returning to open the season. Even if Griffin were to miss a handful of games, his long-term health is the focus.

While Washington gives Griffin time to fully recover, the Redskins will have Brian Orakpo for offseason workouts, as Shanahan said Orakpo is 100-percent recovered from a torn pectoral.
