NFL Draft 2013: 1st round quarterback ‘unlikely’ for Jets

Jets fans will likely boo whoever New York picks in the first round of the draft, but it’s unlikely they will be booing a quarterback.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets still have an unsettled quarterback situation, but it doesn't sound like the Jets will add a first-round prospect into the mix. Geno Smith and the other top quarterbacks may be on the board when New York picks, but the Jets are unlikely to take a quarterback in the first round, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

Offensive and defensive linemen are currently projected at the top of the draft, meaning Smith, E.J. Manuel and other quarterback prospects are likely to be available when the Jets pick at No. 9. New York also holds the No. 13 pick in the first round, but despite two picks and a need at quarterback, New York is instead focused on other players.

According to Cimini, guards Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper, tight end Tyler Eifert, and defensive ends Barkevious Mingo and Jarvis Jones are currently on the Jets’ radar. Although quarterback may still be an issue, the Jets have a number of needs. Instead of adding another player and more cost at quarterback, New York could plug some other holes while waiting to resolve its quarterback situation.

While New York may be unlikely to take a quarterback in the first round, that doesn’t mean the Jets won’t address the position in the draft. Smith could be the only quarterback selected in the first round, meaning some of the other top prospects could still be available when the Jets pick in the second round.

New York currently has five quarterbacks on its roster including incumbent starter Mark Sanchez. Tim Tebow remains on the roster as David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms round out the depth chart. SB Nation's Dan Kadar projected the Jets to take wide receiver Tavon Austin and Mingo.
