NFL Draft 2013: Could Eagles take Tavon Austin at No. 4?

Chip Kelly likes playmakers, and Tavon Austin is arguably the best of the 2013 NFL Draft class.

Mike Ehrmann

Very little is known about Chip Kelly as an NFL coach. Chip Kelly the college football coach loved playmakers, however, and would have no doubt found a way to use Tavon Austin in his Oregon offense. According to Philadelphia Magazine, Kelly is intrigued by the 5'8 in the 2013 NFL Draft, perhaps enough to take him in the first round at No. 4 overall.

The rumor stems from an interview that ESPN's Sal Paolantonio did with 97.5 The Fanatic. Paolantonio said that according to a league general manager, the Eagles could take Austin with their first pick if all of the elite left tackle prospects are already off the board.

The ideal situation might be for the Eagles to trade down. Austin usually slots somewhere in the range of the late top 10 to middle of the first round. If the trio of elite left tackles in Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson are all gone by No. 4, however, they may have a difficult time enticing a team to trade into the top five picks of the draft. If the Eagles really want Austin, their only chance may come at No. 4.

Austin would fit very well within the framework of Kelly’s spread offense. West Virginia found multiple ways to put Austin in space, and the diminutive wideout thrived, racking up 1,289 yards receiving and 643 yards rushing. Austin found the end zone 16 times last season, including once as a kickoff returner. He accumulated nearly another 1,000 yards across 15 punt returns and 33 kickoff returns, as well.
