Although he has confirmed he does indeed have a torn meniscus in his right knee, Mississippi State cornerback Darius Slay said he has continued to work out for teams despite the injury, and doctors have told him he would not need surgery.

A knee injury shouldn’t impact Darius Slay’s draft stock as he won’t need surgery and has continued to work out for teams.

“[Doctors] say I just need to ice it down because it’s not that bad. And then I can get right back up,” Slay told NFL.com. “Nobody said I needed surgery.”
That is good news for Slay, who was rising up draft boards and could potentially be selected in the first round. The injury, which may have occurred during his pro day workout, has not limited his ability to workout for teams. Slay said he’s worked out for Atlanta and Philadelphia after suffering the injury. In all, Slay worked out for 16 teams leading up to the draft.
He has steadily risen up draft boards in recent weeks, thanks in part to a terrific workout at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, the fastest of any defensive back. While the meniscus injury may have limited him some in recent workouts, it shouldn’t pose a threat to his long-term health, especially if it heals without surgery.
SB Nation’s Dan Kadar ranked Slay as the No. 9 cornerback in the draft and No. 74 player overall. He’s projected by most as a second-day pick, with a good chance to go in the second round.
