NFL Draft rumors: Dolphins talking trade of WR Davone Bess, per report

After acquiring Mike Wallace earlier this year, Miami could be shopping their second-leading receiver from 2012. Where could Bess be headed?

Marc Serota

The Cleveland Browns will be making a very important decision in the NFL draft tomorrow with their No. 6 choice overall. In some cases, the fate of a franchise can rest on such a pick. But it's not just about the big moves you make, it's about all the smaller ones, and that is what the Browns are apparently looking to do by inquiring with the Dolphins about wide receiver Davone Bess in a possible trade.

The Browns have an obvious need at wide receiver, but most would consider it a stretch for Cleveland to take any receiver in this class with the No. 6 pick. It could be more suitable for the Browns to draft one later, or in this case, they could be looking to move a mid-round pick to Miami to acquire Bess.

An undrafted free agent in 2008 out of Hawaii, Bess has spent five seasons with the Dolphins, totaling 321 receptions for 3,447 yards. He was second on the team last year with 61 catches for 778 yards, but he could be expendable after the acquisition of Mike Wallace from the Steelers. The Browns had very little production from their receivers last year and were led by rookie Josh Gordon, who had 50 catches for 805 yards in 2012.

Bess and Gordon could team up with Greg Little to give Cleveland's starting quarterback, whether that is Brandon Weeden or another player, an interesting set of weapons. Acquiring Bess should also give the team a little more flexibility in the first round, and that could be key in the long and short term.
