Former Detroit Lion great Barry Sanders advanced through the Madden 25 cover vote and will now be on the cover of the popular EA Sports NFL video game. Sanders beat out Adrian Peterson in the final, a relief for Vikings fans who also believe in the Madden cover jinx.
Barry Sanders wins vote for Madden cover 25th anniversary
If the Madden jinx hits in 2013, it won’t come on the football field as Barry Sanders will be on the cover of the newest edition.

In order to win his spot on the cover, Sanders had to beat out 31 other players in the bracket-style contest. Representing the “old school” side of the bracket, Sanders knocked off Jerry Rice to reach the final. Peterson moved through the “new school” bracket, but was no match for Sanders in the final. Sanders prevailed with 58 percent of the more than 700,000 votes.
EA Sports is celebrating 25 years of the Madden franchise, which began in 1989. This will be Sanders’ second appearance on the Madden cover as he was also on the cover for the 2000 edition. Sanders did not appear in a game while on the cover, however, as he retired just before the start of training camp.
Madden 25 will not be released until August, but EA Sports recently released the first official gameplay trailer.
