2013 NFL Draft results: Sheldon Richardson selected by Jets

Sheldon Richardson is the newest addition to the Jets’ 3-4 defense.

USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 13 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the New York Jets have selected defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson out of the University of Missouri. Richardson was ranked as the second-best defensive tackle in the draft by SB Nation's Matthew Fairburn and ranked fifth overall by Dan Kadar.

The Jets fans at the NFL Draft might not have been too excited about the pick, but Richardson is a solid addition to New York’s defense. He is a great fit among the front three for Rex Ryan’s scheme. He should be able to see plenty of action in 2013.

A scouting report on Richardson from Bleeding Green Nation praised his athleticism:

He is an extraordinary athlete. He never gives up on a play. Richardson is willing to chase the ball 20-30 yards down the field. He has a great motor, plays through whistle, to go along with a fairly high IQ. He also shows versatility by dropping back in coverage. He has an explosive first steps and shows good quickness. He is a great tackler.

Height: 6’3

Weight: 294 pounds

40-yard dash: 5.02 seconds

Vertical leap: 32 inches

Broad jump: 116 inches

Richardson wasn't slow for his group, finishing fourth among defensive tackles in the 40, but that did not stop him from running again at his pro day and posting a best time of 4.81. That would have easily topped the 4.92 that Sharrif Floyd led the group with in Indianapolis. He also did a respectable 30 reps on the bench at the combine.
