Chiefs draft rumors: Kansas City knows their pick, the pick doesn’t

The Chiefs know who they’re taking No. 1 overall, but they’re not telling anyone.

USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs know who they're taking with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Andrew Siciliano of the NFL Network. Unfortunately, they haven't told anyone who that pick will be, including the player himself.

We can make an educated guess, however. The two most likely candidates seem to be left tackles Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M and Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. Joeckel has been the most common name atop SB Nation's various mock drafts between Matthew Fairburn and Dan Kadar throughout the offseason. He is regarded by many as the top player at his position and perhaps the best prospect in his draft class.

Fisher, meanwhile, has been one of the biggest risers up draft boards in the intervening months between the end of the college football season and the draft. Reports Wednesday indicated that Chiefs are leaning towards taking Fisher, largely because thus far, they have been unable to deal left tackle Branden Albert. The Chiefs apparently view Fisher as the better right tackle prospect, allowing him to start his rookie season if Albert sticks around at left tackle. If/when Albert moves on, Fisher could then transition to the left side.

It’s unclear what other prospects are in play at No. 1, with every rumor over the past few weeks suggesting that the Chiefs want a tackle. The Chiefs still have major holes along the defensive line, however. If you’re looking for a dark horse candidate to land with the Chiefs, anyone among a talented group of defensive tackles -- including Utah’s Star Lotulelei, Missouri’s Sheldon Richardson and Florida’s Sharrif Floyd -- could be the pick.
