2013 NFL Draft: Chiefs have made their pick, according to report

The pick is in for the Kansas City Chiefs, and it may not be who you were expecting.

Eric Fisher will be the Kansas City Chiefs' selection at No. 1 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Luke Joeckel has reportedly been informed of the decision. He has been a favorite to land with the Chiefs throughout the offseason, but according to Williams, the Chiefs have decided to go with Fisher, a fellow left tackle, instead.

As with any last-minute draft rumors, some skepticism should be exercised. ESPN’s Ed Werder has already come out and negated Williams’ report, saying that the Chiefs have yet to talk to Joeckel.

Reports that Fisher was destined for Kansas City heated up in just the last 24 hours. It appears that left tackle Branden Albert is likely to stay with the Chiefs, and the organization reportedly feels that Fisher may better suited to spend a season or two at right tackle until he can eventually transition to the left side in place of Albert.

As for Joeckel, don’t expect him to last long much longer after the first pick if he falls. He could entice a lot of tackle-hungry teams (looking at you Miami) to try and trade up for him. Joeckel is still arguably the best pure pass blocker available in this year’s draft class. He currently ranks as SB Nation’s top overall prospect.
