2013 NFL Draft results: Lions fill ‘biggest need’ with Ezekiel Ansah

SB Nation’s Lions blog reacts to the selection of BYU’s Ezekiel Ansah.

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have selected BYU defensive end Ezekiel Ansah with the fifth overall pick. SB Nation's Lions blog Pride Of Detroit seems pleased with the pick, having filled one of their biggest offseason needs with the raw athlete. Here's Sean Yuille's take:

How exactly does Ansah fit into the Lions' plans for 2013? He instantly becomes one of the favorites to start at defensive end, a position that was lacking both talent and depth after the release of Kyle Vanden Bosch and the departure of Cliff Avril. It remains to be seen how exactly the Lions will use Ansah from a situational standpoint, but he will be expected to improve their pass rush in a big way.

Instant analysis: The addition of Ansah fills the Lions' biggest need, meaning they can turn their focus to the offensive line and other areas that need help going forward. While Ansah will need some time to develop and truly reach his potential, this pick instantly upgrades the Lions' defensive line.

And here’s what Mocking The Draft’s Dan Kadar had to say:

With the top three left tackles off the board, taking Ziggy Ansah was an easy choice for the Lions. They coached him at the Senior Bowl and he excelled when lined up in the wide 9. With Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley and now Ansah, the Lions have one of the most disruptive front lines in the NFL. The question about Ansah is just how fast he can develop and be a factor in the NFL.
